Abstract

Broadening the scale and scope of manufacturing industries to meet growing
consumer demand has led to substantial economic growth, but it has also posed serious
challenges to environmental sustainability. Gaining insight into the sustainability-related
knowledge, attitudes, and practices of various manufacturing firms is therefore essential
for a successful transition towards sustainability. Employing the KAP (Knowledge,
Attitudes, and Practices) model, the study analyses the linkages between knowledge
and attitudes regarding sustainability and the adoption of sustainable practices in
manufacturing units in Kerala, India. A quantitative approach was followed, with
data collected from 91 managers through a structured questionnaire, which was then
analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM).
A disjoint two-stage approach was used to analyse the data as the model included a
higher-order construct. Findings reveal a strong positive relationship between knowledge
and sustainability practices (β = 0.413, p < 0.001), with an even stronger influence of
attitudes on the adoption of these practices (β = 0.428, p < 0.001). The study highlights
that while knowledge is essential, fostering a favourable attitude towards sustainability
is crucial for effectively implementing sustainability practices.
