Tamil Plantation Labourers in Malaysian Tamil Folk Songs

Abstract

This article explores the life of the Tamil plantation labourers during the British colonisation as reflected in Malaysian Tamil folk songs. The source for this paper was based on the Malaysian Tamil folk songs gathered by Thandayutham. Data for this paper was obtained via library research. This essay is written in a descriptive mode. It used the transport theory to describe the social mobilisations of the Tamils. The theory shows sufficiently well about the part played by the transportation in organizing the social structure of the deterred Tamil plantation labourers. It analysed the mode of travels made by the Tamil labourers under the British colonisation in Malaysia and how the modes affected the labourers along their journey. The paper also discloses about the problems faced by the Tamil labourers and how the British treated them to fulfill their intention. According to Dundes (1965b), there are only two steps in studying folklore in literature (p.136). There are i) Objective and empirical (Identification) and ii) Subjective and speculative (Interpretation). Identification looks for similarities. Interpretation delineates differences. As mentioned previously researcher had found the association between the content of the folk songs and the recorded historical facts that showed similarities. Hence, researcher decided to apply the objective and empirical (identification method) for the song analysis.

மலேசியத் தமிழ் நாட்டுப்புறப் பாடல்களில் பிரித்தானியர் காலத் தோட்டத் தொழிலாளர்களின் வாழ்வினைப் பேசுகின்றது. முனைவர் தண்டாயுதம் அவர்களின் மலேசியத் தமிழ் நாட்டுப்புறப் பாடல்கள் எனும் நூல் இவ்வாய்வுக்கு மூலமாகும். போக்குவரத்து கோட்பாட்டின் (transport theory) அடிப்படையில் சமூக நகர்வுகளை (social mobility) இவ்வாய்வு சுட்டுகிறது. போக்குவரத்து சாதனங்கள் சமூக அமைப்பில் ஏற்படுத்தும் மாற்றங்களை இக்கட்டுரை காட்டுகிறது. பிரித்தானியர் காலத் தோட்டத் தொழிலாளர் வாழ்வில் இருந்த போக்குவரத்து சாதனங்கள் குறித்த செய்திகளும் இதில் அடங்கும். இதே கால கட்டத்தில் இப்போக்குவரத்து சாதனங்கள் தமிழர்களின் வாழ்வை எவ்வகையில் பாதித்தது என்பதும் பேசப்படுகின்றது. அக்காலகட்டத்தில் தமிழ்த் தோட்டத் தொழிலாளர்கள் எதிர்நோக்கிய சிக்கல்களையும் பிரித்தானியர் அவர்களை எவ்வாறு நடத்தினர் என்பதுவும் கூட விவரிக்கப்படுகின்றது.  இவை அனைத்தும் மலேசியத் தமிழ் நாட்டுப்புறப் பாடல்களில் வெளிப்படும் விதம் இக்கட்டுரையில் முன்வைக்கப்படுகின்றது.
