Tamil Literature and Translations in Mauritius

Abstract

This article describes the history of Tamil Literature and Translation in Mauritius. The main sources for this paper were based on books, magazines and interview. The period that had been considered was from 1930 till date. This essay is written in a descriptive mode, exploratory mode and quantitative reference was done. The research shows that the learned people who came from Tamil Nadu to Mauritius was the first pioneer of Tamil Literature in Mauritius. They left their legacy by imparting Tamil knowledge to those who were interested in learning Tamil Language. Consequently this has been a vital element for them to write their thoughts in the form of literature. They mostly wrote to bring an awareness among the people thus bringing reforms in the society. During the course of time there had been an urgent need to translate the Tamil Literature in European languages such as English and French. This has made the content of Tamil Language accessible to the Tamil Community. It has been observed through this research that there have been many devotional songs which have been written and their transliterations were given. Besides this, Thiruppugazh, Thirukkural and Bharathiyar songs have been translated for the Tamil people to get acquainted with Tamil Literature. The Tamil Literature and Translations have been gateways for the promotion and preservation of the Tamil Language and Culture till date in Mauritius.

இக்கட்டுரை, மொரீசியசு நாட்டின் தமிழ் இலக்கியம் மற்றும் மொழிபெயர்ப்பு வரலாற்றைப் பேசுகிறது. அந்நாட்டு நூல்கள், சஞ்சிகைகள் மற்றும் நேர்காணலின் வழி சேகரிக்கப்பட்ட  தரவுகளை மூலமாகக்கொண்டு இக்கட்டுரை படைக்கப்படுகிறது. 1930ஆம் ஆண்டு தொடங்கி இன்றைய காலகட்டம் வரையிலான கால அளவில் இது அமைகின்றது. இது பண்புசார் விளக்கமுறை ஆய்வு. இருபதாம் நூற்றாண்டில் மொரீசியசு நாட்டில் தமிழிலக்கியங்கள் தோன்றத் தொடங்கின. இதற்குத் தமிழகத்திலிருந்து வந்த பேரறிஞர்களின் பங்கு  உயரியது. இவர்கள் தமிழ்மொழியில் இலக்கியப் படைப்புகளைப் படைத்தனர். இவ்விலக்கியங்கள் தமிழ்மொழியை மொரீசியசு நாட்டில் நிலைத்து நிற்க வழி வகுத்தன. பெரும்பாலும் பரட்சிகரமான எழுத்துகளின் வழி மக்கள் மத்தியில் விழிப்புணர்வை எற்படுத்தும் வகையில் இவர்களின் படைப்புகள் அமைந்தன. காலப்போக்கில் இவ்விலக்கியங்களை ஐரோப்பிய மொழிகளுக்குக் குறிப்பாக ஆங்கிலம், பிரஞ்சு மொழிகளுக்கு மொழி பெயர்க்க வேண்டிய அவசியம் எற்பட்டுவிட்டது. இது, தமிழை அறிந்திராத தமிழ் மக்களுக்கும் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தின் உள்ளீடுகளைக் கொண்டுச் சேர்த்தன. இவ்வாய்வின் வழி, மொரீசியசில் தமிழ் இலக்கிய வரலாற்றில், பல பக்திப் பாடல்கள், அவற்றுக்கான மொழி பெயர்ப்புகளுடன் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளமை தெரியவந்துள்ளது. இது தவிர, திருப்புகழ், திருக்குறள், பாரதியர் பாடல்கள் போன்ற தமிழ் இலக்கியச் செல்வங்களும் மொரீசியசு தமிழர்களுக்கு அறிமுகப்படுத்தும் வகையில் மொழியாக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன. மொழிபெயர்ப்புகளும் தமிழ் இலக்கியங்களும் எப்பொழுதுமே மொரீசியசு நாட்டின் தமிழ் மொழி மற்றும் பண்பாடு ஆகியவற்றைக் காப்பதிலும் ஊக்குவிப்பதிலும் முக்கிய பங்காற்றுகின்றன.
