Pursuing sustainable development has become a critical concern for
organisations worldwide. This concern also affects the public institutions, where
balancing diverse stakeholder expectations, navigating resource constraints, and
ensuring public accountability pose significant challenges to achieving comprehensive
sustainability goals. Recognising the importance of intangible resources in achieving such
goals, this study investigates the influence of green intellectual capital on sustainable
performance and the mediating effect of environmental knowledge on this relationship
in the Malaysian public institutions. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a
purposive sampling technique among leaders of government agencies in Malaysia. The
data was analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).
The results show that green intellectual capital acts as a positive predictor of sustainable
performance. In this relationship, environmental knowledge acts as a mediating
role, implying that organisations need to have a consistent practice in developing
environmental knowledge among the employees. Instead, environmental awareness helps
firms better leverage the value of green intangible assets.
