Abstract

The Holy Qur’an serves as a guidance for humanity, leading towards happiness and wellness in life. One of the most important aspects of this well-being is the provision of food and drink, alongside the prevention of hunger and poverty. While some people argue the Qur’an as merely a book concerning spiritual rituals, it is indeed a holistic constitution for life that provides guidance on the effective and ethical use of natural resources provided by Allah to ensure food security. This study addresses the understanding the true concept of food security from a Quranic perspective, alongside identifying the natural resources that the Qur’an encourages humanity to utilise. It also considers contemporary global challenges related to food sustainability. The research adopts a thematic approach by analysing selected Qur’anic verses related to verses that are related with natural resources, their meanings and understanding wisdoms in achieving sustainable food security. One of the notable findings highlights that food security is hard to achieve without maintaining a balance between needs and luxurious wants. The Qur’an emphasis the responsible use of natural resources including agriculture, animal and marine resources to accomplish food security while cautioning against extravagance and wastefulness which hinder sustainability. The research has played a role in the identification of the natural resources referred to by the Qur’an and the degree to which the Qur’an offers directives for their use globally. The research also suggests investigating other natural resources as stated in the Qur’an and promoting them so that humankind can learn from them.
