Abstract
Changes in the structure of the contemporary family which emphasises nuclear family can pose new challenges to the care of the aged who need social support to sustain their lives. This article is based on a study involving 413 respondents from the states of Perlis and Malacca. The study proves that children are still the main providers of social support for the aged. Most of the respondents receive non-physical social support such as care and emotional support during times of sickness, and financial assistance as well from their children. High on the list of expectations of the aged, however, is visits and love by their younger family members.
